Trowbridge Town are certainly providing their supporters with unpleasant shocks—the biggest this season being at Glastonbury last Saturday, where after leading the league champions by 4-1 some 30 minutes from the end, they were ultimately defeated by 6-4. What went wrong to bring about this almost unbelievable result? For the superstitious we provide the reminder that it was Trowbridge's 13th league match, but for those who did not see the game we can only record that it was a tussle which provided such a complete reversal of form that it had to be seen to be believed. It seems almost incredible that side with such a substantial lead could lose, but in that last hectic period Glastonbury played with astounding vigour, and completely shattered the Trowbridge defence.
In the first half Trowbridge gave one of their best displays of team work for many months. They definitely looked and played like potential champions. Their shooting was unhesitating and well directed, and at half-time they led 3-1 through goals by Haddon, Grimason and Greenland, to one by Owen for the home side. Not long after the restart Collis headed past his own goalkeeper to make the score 4-1 —and everything seemed set for a Trowbridge victory. Both sides were playing fast end-to-end football with half an hour to go, and then suddenly the Town's luck changed, and to add to the difficulties one or two of the defenders tired under the strain, particularly Hulbert. Glastonbury seized this golden opportunity, and threw every ounce of energy into attack. The result was two quick goals by Jarvis to close the gap to 4-3. Then Denis Tuck was penalised in the "box”, and from a disputed penalty the scores were levelled by Parsons. From this point Trowbridge's resistance grew weaker, their positional strength disintegrated, and when in desperation goalkeeper Vince dashed outside his goal area and booted the ball, only to see it rebound from centre-forward Owen over his head into the net, Trowbridge's cup of misfortune was full to the brim. In the closing stages a sixth goal was scored—a grand shot from the left wing. It was a most disappointing result for Trowbridge, who had looked like avenging their home defeat a few weeks ago - but it was a grand game played at great pace, and without a half-time break owing to the weather conditions. Both goalkeepers played splendidly.
