3 - 1
 Bristol Rovers Colts

League (Western League Division One)

3:00 PM Kick-off

Scorers: Jim Grimason (2), Dennis Hancock

The inclusion of Ernie Marshall, transferred from Bath City, in the Trowbridge side last Saturday definitely gave the team a more convincing look, and they won on merit. Marshall, a well-built player, was quick in the tackle, and his long, accurate passes frequently set an attack in motion before the Rovers' defenders realised it. It was a good, hard, interesting game, with the Colts fighting every inch of the way, and often looking like pulling off a victory with their swift moves. For 20 minutes or so Trowbridge attacked almost incessantly, and it was remarkable how the Rovers' goal escaped downfall. Several times the ball sailed from Haddon under the crossbar and away to the other side, while other occasions Cooper brought off wonderful clearances in goal. Powell (centre-half), too, must have wondered whether he was in a boxing contest or soccer match, for once or twice his head was almost knocked off his shoulders with terrific shots.
Grimason was a lively Trowbridge leader and his energetic persistency brought a goal to Trowbridge in 22 minutes. The ball had hovered in the Bristol goalmouth and a rather harmless looking shot went to Cooper, who surprisingly failed gather the ball, and Grimason, who had followed up smartly, tapped the ball into the net. Just before this Haddon had badly "sliced” the ball when faced with open goal, but the winger had had some good shots saved. Cooper had also tipped a shot from Webb against the crossbar. The Rovers had seldom looked like scoring, but in the 30th minute Vince misjudged a centre from the right, and the ball dropped to the far side, where Woody snapped up an easy chance and equalised. In the second half the Rovers were more prominent in attack, and Vince saved splendidly from Stiff (outside-right). In the 57th minute, however, Webb centred perfectly for Grimason to head past Cooper. The Rovers defended well, though their goal had more than one fortunate let-off. Trowbridge's third goal came when Grimason shot against the foot of upright. The rebounded and in the excitement again bobbed off an upright before Hancock managed to send it into the net. Cooper having been knocked out at the time. Welch, who played with great zest, often dribbling the ball long distances into enemy territory, had to retire for a short spell with an injured leg, but returned as full of vigour as ever. Sutherland was unable to play owing to a damaged ankle, and King deputised most creditably.
Trowbridge team; Vince; King, Welch; Lovesey, Tuck, Marshall; Haddon, Greenland, Grimason, Hancock. Webb.
