Match Report

Wells City
1 - 2
 Trowbridge Town

League (Western League Division One)
Saturday, November 17th, 1951
3:00 PM Kick-off

Scorers: Dennis Hancock

Trowbridge Town were rather unlucky to lose both points at Wells. In the first half there was no doubt about the City's superiority, but after the breather Trowbridge took the initiative, and had their forwards taken a few of the scoring opportunities that came their way two points would have gone into the Town bag. Even so, there were a number of shots that missed by the barest of margins, and two were kept out by the goalposts. There is no doubt that the Town have fallen on unlucky times, and they are finding it extremely hard to get out of the rut.
Denis Tuck made a welcome and successful return to his position at centre-half, Jim Sutherland returning to his position at wing half. Hulbert, at right back, did not have a good match, and Sutherland found himself in a strange land again after having become accustomed to the centre-half position. Since joining Trowbridge he has played fall back, wing half and centre-half. Tuck was a tower of strength at centre-half. Player-manager Harry Haddon said after the match: "A lot of our trouble at the moment is due to the fact that we cannot play the same team running for two weeks at a time. Next week shall be without Hancock, he is wanted for Wiltshire. It a big handicap because we are so short of experienced players".
In Saturday's game Wells scored the only goal of the first half through Carroll four minutes from the interval. He headed a centre from Dodkin past Vince. Trowbridge's improvement after the change-over bore fruit after 23 minutes, when Hancock equalised. Just before this Webb had hit the ball hard and true, but rebounded off an upright. Webb was again unlucky later on, when another shot struck the crossbar. Eight minutes from time Redwood, the City's most dangerous forward, scored the winning goal.
