Trowbridge Town, competing in the competition with an all-amateur eleven for the first time since 1938, when they won the cup by defeating 1st Survey Co, in the final, had an easy victory over Swindon British Railways.
A big second-half improvement the goal-scoring department gave Trowbridge a six-nil victory over Swindon British Railways on the Frome Road ground, but the winners did not impress as a side likely to go far in the competition. In fairness to the side, however, it must be remembered that this was a brand-new combination on trial for the first time. By the end of last Saturday's match much understanding had been gained, and it possible, therefore, that they may improve even more and develop into one of the surprise teams of this year's tourney.
Trowbridge's biggest fault was the first-half hesitation of the inside forwards shoot. They would do well to remember that goals are all-important in cup-ties. Pearson, the new centre forward from Peasedown - he serving with the R A F. at Colerne - missed some good openings. He was playing in an unaccustomed position at centre forward, however, and one noticed occasions that he lost chances through trying to bring the ball into position for a left-foot shot from his proper position at inside left. He scored a couple of good goals the second half, and he certainly possesses the physique and shooting power to develop into a profitable goal-scorer. Haycock, tried at inside left, was often playing at half-back.
The Railways played quite well the early stages, but smart approach work broke down robust tacklers. King and Crook doing well. Later the wing halves, Bowering and Danning, stole the limelight, and ball control was far from easy such deep mud. Jones's handling of the ball in the home goal also impressed. Stalker, on Trowbridge's books, was a dangerous raider for the Railways. There was only one first-half goal, by Pearson, though Williams had made excellent saves from Hancock. After the change-over Trowbridge discarded their goal-shyness, and shot hard and often and the visitors' goal had many lucky escapes before falling, Pearson lobbed the ball perfectly after 51 minutes' play for Haycock to head through. After Williams had saved a fine drive by Pearson, the ball went to Gabb, who was fouled in the penalty area. Haycock scoring from the spot in minutes. After 75 minutes Pearson scored a beauty with a left-foot "daisy cutter", and five minutes later Pearson headed a splendid goal from Gabb's centre. Jim Paviour had a shot kept out by the crossbar, but Bowering made up Trowbridge's half-dozen with a long range drive. The attendance was 1,480. Receipts £81.
