Although they turned one-goal interval deficit into a 3-1 victory in this game at Frome Road on Saturday Trowbridge did not impress, though they deserved victory over very robust opponents. Trowbridge were without Denis Tuck, who had not recovered from a leg injury received the F.A. Cup-tie at Chippenham. Jim Sutherland did duty at centre-half, and surprised most by a really impressive display. Green, who displaced Vince, also played convincingly in goal. Clandown were very nippy for half an hour, and the Town defence had many anxious moments. Quite early Wilkinson (outside right) shook the upright, and Pratten often looked as though he would score. Trowbridge passed badly, and their old fault of close-passing against opponents who tackled with little pretence to style proved their undoing. Clandown's goal had some narrow escapes, however, Rogers once kicking off the goal-line from Greenland. Welch received a nasty shaking and went to outside-left for a while, Webb falling back, and during this period Greenland. Trowbridge's most effective marksman, had a good shot well saved by Newbury at the expense of a corner. After 20 minutes, however, Trowbridge, as several other matches this season, conceded the first goal of the game. Dallimore centred first lime, and the ball bobbed disconcertingly in the home goalmouth, and Schrader managed nip and forced the ball into the net. Sutherland cleared well from Pratten, and Newbury saved from Greenland and Webb. Generally speaking, the shooting was wild and off the target.
After McGhee had equalised after five minutes of the second half, following a great run by left back Welch, Trowbridge re-arranged their forwards, which brought a new freshness to the attack, and Clandown's defence were sore pressed, Newbury and Nuth performing well. One of the best movements of the game was initiated by Lovesey, whose pass sent Haddon going. He passed inside to Watson, who headed on to Webb, whose shot Newbury saved splendidly. In the 74th minute Webb most unselfishly passed to Watson, better positioned for a shot, and the latter obliged with fine low shot which beat Newbury completely to put the Town ahead. Shortly before the end Haddon, on the left, taking a Grimason pass, dribbled the ball into the centre and then beat Newbury with a swerving right-foot shot.
Trowbridge team: Green; Hulbert, Welch; Lovesey, Sutherland, Grimason; Haddon, Watson, McGhee, Greenland, Webb.
