Trowbridge were drawn to visit the north of the county to meet one of the lesser lights of Swindon clubs, the Casuals, in the first round of the Wilts Cup, but induced their opponents to visit Trowbridge instead. The Town thus had the satisfaction of avoiding considerable financial loss, and the Casuals will reap some monetary benefit, there was quite good "gate,†but apart from this aspect of affairs the match could have given little satisfaction to anybody. From beginning to end the game was very poor one. Trowbridge, represented by a mixed team of Western and Wilts League players, never got together showed anything like their usual form, while the Casuals, who had one or two very good players in their ranks, were not as a team to Wilts league standard. Play was scrappy on the whole, with occasional pretty passages and good movements, and now and again a brilliant individual effort. Sleightholme was to have appeared at centre for the Town, but failed turn up, and Burns took the inside-right position after the game had been in progress 20 minutes. He was obviously right out of form, and the forward line as a whole was disjointed. The halves all did well, and there was no fault to find with the defence as a whole, which was always too good for the Swindon attack. On the visitors' side the inside forwards showed that they know how to shoot, but their attempts at combination in the field did not impress, while their defence was often lacking in judgement, though tackling stubbornly. Horton was again the best forward on the home side, and scored the first goal in the first quarter of an hour, before the team was complete. Within two minutes James had tested Cosway again, and Horton hit the crossbar with a hot shot. He repeated the performance when the Town were awarded a penalty, and at the interval the score was one goal to nil in the home team's favour. Horace James scored the second and only other goal, when the second half was well advanced, smartly snapping up a chance following a scrimmage in the Swindon goal-mouth. Stevens, the home goalkeeper, deserves a word of praise for more than one smart save, and he was particularly prominent for clever picking up of low shots. The teams were: Trowbridge—Stevens ; Mattock and J Ladd ; Roberts, Arman and Gerrish; Mortimer, Burns, Horton, James and Pratten. Swindon Casuals—Cosway; Wakefield and Iles ; Smith, Rowland and Mountjoy; Reynolds. A. Middleton, Church, Middleton and Godwin |
