The most unexpected result was probably the 3-0 defeat of the cup holders. Devizes Town, by Trowbridge, especially as Devizes had ground advantage. Devizes are also the present undefeated leaders in the Wilts League. Although they had slightly more of the play and had bad luck in the opening minutes, they never combined as cleverly as Trowbridge. What made Trowbridge's win even more creditable was the fact that the team had not played together very much. They included Jim Paviour, team manager and former England amateur international. At left back he was a rare stumbling block to the Devizes attack. His intelligent positioning time and time again provided that all-important stability in the team which had been lacking in recent games. Outstanding in the Trowbridge attack were the two inside forwards, Hancock (team captain) and Haycock, both of whom are county players.
In the opening stages play was fairly even, with the attack swinging from one end of the field to the other. After about ten minutes Ferris, Devizes centre forward, sent in a shot which beat the Trowbridge defence, but the ball hit the upright and was cleared. In the 15th minute Trowbridge went ahead through Pearson after a good movement on the left wing. Devizes had slightly more of the play, and shortly after Smith netted for them, but was ruled offside. Trowbridge went further ahead through Ricketts after good movement started by Paviour. Ricketts sent in a shot from a difficult angle which deceived the Devizes goalie, Hopgood, and the ball went through his arms. Devizes hard for some time and both Smith and Bryant went close, but the Trowbridge defence remained firm.
A quarter-of-an-hour after the restart Trowbridge went further ahead when Gabb sent in a high shot just under the crossbar. The shot again deceived the goalie, and Hancock ran to send the ball into the net. Soon after, Gabb had the Devizes defence wide open, but his shot went just outside. Devizes still pressed, and Smith came close to scoring, but Jones dived at his feet and the ball was pushed out for a corner. Devizes did most of the attacking for the rest of the game, but the Trowbridge defence remained firm.
