League (Western League Division One)
Saturday, September 9th, 1950
Att. 2,836
3:15 PM Kick-off

Scorers: Ken Abrahams, Ivor Compton (3), Harry Haddon (4), Ron Webb

After rather erratic start on Saturday, Ivor Compton again proved to one of the most dangerous forwards, and for the second week succession scored his hat-trick. Haddon was also on top form and scored four goals. two of them from the penalty spot. Wells opened with a very lively attack and after less than two minutes went ahead. The ball bobbed about in the Trowbridge goalmouth with the defenders almost helpless, and then Kew headed the ball in with Vince out of position. Trowbridge, stung by this early shock, immediately went into the attack, and after they had missed several chances Haddon equalised with a hard ground shot just inside the post. For about ten minutes both sides were playing fast and good football in an endeavour to draw ahead, but then the pace slowed down considerably until in the 28th minute Trowbridge scored through Compton after good work by Webb.
Wells were not deterred by this, however, and played hard to get the equaliser, but about ten minutes from the interval Trowbridge suddenly went "goal crazy" and scored three in about five minutes. The first of these came from Compton after a good lob from Hancock, and then Compton got his hat-trick with header following corner by Haddon. Straight from the kick-off Abrahams, who was the brains behind many of the Trowbridge attacks, went through and made it five with hard shot in the roof of the net. Almost on the whistle Lovesey handled inside the penalty area after a corner, and from the spot Grant gave Vince no chance at all. Although they had had slightly more of the play. Trowbridge were lucky be leading by 5-2 at the interval.
In the second half Trowbridge were the superior team and shortly after the restart Webb scored with good shot. Trowbridge were on the attack for most of the second half, and scored No. 7 with a penalty after Webb had been fouled. Wells made number of spirited attacks, but at no time looked very confident. Wells repeatedly used the off-side trap, but this did not prevent Haddon scoring again following a good pass by Abrahams. Haddon maintained his reputation as champion penalty kicker with a second penalty goal to give him his "hat-trick". Hancock, who was playing at inside-right in place of Maher who was not available, played very well and was unlucky not to have been among the goal scorers. Trowbridge fully deserved to win, but they were lucky to win by such a large margin. The attendance was 2836.
