TROWBRIDGE BEAT PORTSMOUTH XI Trowbridge beat a strong Portsmouth XI by three goals one in friendly match on Wednesday evening before 2941 spectators, Including Mr. H lackson, manager of Portsmouth team. The English League championship trophy, which Portsmouth won last season, was on view in the grandstand, and during the interval was carried round the ground by members of the local Supporters' Club. The Trowbridge players gave an enthusiastic display and were always the equal of their opponents, who had Yuill at right-hack. He was badly injured while playing for Portsmouth first team last November, and was having his first trial. He played a grand game. Shortly after the start Henwood, the visitors outside-left, had to retire with damaged ankle, and Beale was allowed to play as substitute. Beale captained the R.A.O.C team in the Army Cup Final last season, which they won. Trowbridge, facing glaring sun, defended well, and Vince made wonderful save when Edwards raced past Tuck and shot with tremendous power. Next Wood was clear of the backs, but Vince shot out foot and deflected the forward's shot wide of goal. Trowbridge attacked with much vigour and with the Portsmouth defence wide open Abrahams sent Compton through the gap to score with a well-placed shot. By this goal Trowbridge deservedly led at halftime. In the second half Portsmouth made determined efforts to equalise, and succeeded after 15 minutes, when Edwards cut through and scored. Abrahams was just wide with a good cross-shot, and when Webb shot from the ball bounced right across the goal and went just outside the far post. Tuck, Sheppard, Haycock, Lovesev and Sutherland all played well when Portsmouth attacked hotly. Fifteen minutes from the end, however, Abrahams sent a deceiving shot from near the goal-line on the left of the goal, and Craig, the goalkeeper, hit the hall into the back of the net to give Trowbridge the lead. A minute from time Maher leapt to fine centre by Webb and scored Trowbridge's third. After the match players and official both teams had dinner at the Roundstone Hotel.
