Trowbridge Town, with eight of their senior Western League side, were surprisingly defeated at Melksham in the final of the Swanborough Cup on Wednesday evening. Trowbridge attacked for long spells, but missed many scoring chances, and Melksham are be congratulated on their resolute display.
Trowbridge had their first team goalkeeper, George Vince, at centre forward, but it is not strange position to him. He did very well there. Coombes was played in goal because he is a Melksham man. Melksham, from the start, played as a team, with rare enthusiasm that goes a long way towards winning games. They had determination written all over them, whereas many of the Trowbridge players played much too casually, and gave the impression that goals would come easily enough in the end.
Melksham took the lead through Murray, who nipped through take advantage of a faulty back-pass by HUI- Hancock equalised, and at half-time the score was 1-1. It remained this after 90 minutes, although Trowbridge had a penalty when Vince was brought down. He took the kick, but sent the ball against an upright and it was cleared. Skinner also netted but the goal was not allowed. Melksham got the winning goal during extra time, and received a great ovation when they received the cup. There were over 1.000 spectators. Player-Manager Haddon, of Trowbridge said afterwards: "I have no excuses. Trowbridge missed chances and I congratulate Melksham.
Trowbridge team was Coombes: Hulbert, Sutherland: Lovesey, Hill, Marshall: Greenland, Dixon, Vmce, Hancock, Skinner.
