As a spectacle this game at Chippenham was disappointing and never approached the standard reached in the League match between these clubs on Dec. 15th. True, the ground conditions, which were responsible for the ball playing queer tricks, beat the players very often. On a day which called for the long sweeping open pass to bring the wingers into use, the forwards on both sides persisted in keeping the ball close, methods which were completely ineffective. Bright spot of the match from the United viewpoint was another fine display by Johnson, latest acquisition, who scored the all-important goal as well. Dagg played well in patches. Trowbridge were unimpressive, with a big weakness at half back, where only Marshall played up to form. Judged on this showing, compared with their previous visit to The Firs this season, Trowbridge missed Welch and Skinner, absent through injury, very much.
United opened an aggressive note, but Trowbridge defence survived. Once Dagg shot over from a good position. In Trowbridge's first attack Webb was only just too high with a lovely drive. Elms placed a corner nicely on the United left and Hulbert headed out on the goal-line after a shot from Allen had beaten Vince. Haddon came into the picture with two fierce drives in as many minutes, both of which were blocked by defenders. Trowbridge were awarded an indirect free kick five yards out, and Webb pushed the ball to Haddon, whose drive struck Dagg, standing on the goal-line. A dull spell was followed by Vince saving smartly from Dagg, a defender completing the clearance. Trowbridge goal had a let-off when with the defence wide open Elms just failed to connect with a pass from Allen right across the goalmouth. At the other end United defenders stood appealing for offside and let Hancock clean through, but he shot hopelessly wide of a yawning goal.
The second half was only three minutes old when Elms gave Johnson a nice through pass, and he went on to slip the ball past Vince as the goalkeeper came out. Next incident of note was a run by Dagg in which he beat several defenders, but his shot lacked force and Vince cleared easily. McLoughlin beat Grimason in a race for possession following a shrewd Haddon pass, and then Haddon drove just wide of a post with McLoughlin beaten. After 22 minutes Liddle miskicked and let in Webb, from whose centre Greenland gave McLoughlin no chance. In the next minute a terrific drive from crashed on to the crossbar with McLoughlin jumping much too late. In later exchanges Vince twice dealt with shots from Johnson, and then a shot from Grimason rebounded off McLoughlin. who did not know much about it. A draw was an adequate result.
