Trowbridge were good value for the pair of Western League points they brought away from The Firs on Saturday. Biggest factor in their success was superior forward play, their attack being slicker and displaying a better cohesion then the United line, which was tagged in comparison. Pick of the Trowbridge forwards was inside-right Granville, and Webb and Dean also had a good match. Cyril Greenland, brought in as reserve, put up a good show, and scored a neat goal after taking over the centre-forward position from Alloway in the second half. The Trowbridge wing halves, Marshall and Lovesey, played no small part in their side's victory, giving their forwards a good service as well as keeping a hold on the opposing forwards. Godwin was about the pick of the United forwards, some of his ball distribution being very shrewd. Dagg was good in patches, but has lost much of his former snap in front of goal. United were first to attack, and Vince confidently fielded a high centre from Goddard. Trowbridge went into the attack with a delightful left-wing movement which ended with Green diving across his goal to turn a drive from Granville round the post. Another Trowbridge corner, nicely placed by Webb, whose corner kicks were an object lesson throughout the game, again brought Green into action, and the keeper did well to turn the ball over the bar. Pierce nearly put through his own goal from Greenland, the ball going for a corner from which Granville headed over. Back went United, and Dagg rounded Tuck, but shot tamely into Vince's hands. From a centre by Elms Dagg put the ball just wide of a post, and Dagg just failed to connect properly with his head with a Denyer centre and the ball dropped into Vince’s hands. At the end on 18 minutes Trowbridge forced a corner on the left. Webb placed it beautifully and Green conceded another corner; again, Webb dropped over a beauty and this time Dean beat Green. In the next minute Webb cut in to meet a cross centre from opposite wing and Green was lucky to deflect the ball over the bar. From the comer kick Greenland should have scored, but he hesitated and dropped the ball on top of the bar. After half an hour a pass from Dean put Webb into a perfect scoring position, and the left-winger flashed the ball past Green. Five minutes later it was United's turn. Elms got over a centre and Godwin left Vince standing with a grand low drive. Vince just beat Goddard in a race for possession and kicked away, and Dando cleared on the goal-line with Vince out of position. The second-half play did not reach the standard of the first, and it was late in the game before more goals came. Early on Dagg missed a glorious chance of equalising following a right-wing pass. Just after the United centre-forward had cruel luck when a header from a pass by Mason hit the foot of an upright with Vince helpless. Again, Vince turned a full-blooded drive from Edwards over the bar. A typical Webb shot hit the crossbar. Ten minutes from the end Greenland shot into the far corner of the net following centre by Alloway, and Trowbridge finished on an attacking note, and in the last minute Dean scored number four following a left-wing pass. Teams: Chippenham Utd: Green; Lloyd, Fox; Mason, Pierce, Edwards; Denyer, Goddard, Dagg, Godwin, Elms. Trowbridge Town: Vince; Coppack, Dando; Lovesey, Tuck, Marshall; Greenland, Granville, Alloway, Dean, Webb. Report from The Wiltshire Times
