Trowbridge Win First Home Game
Trowbridge entertained Street and beat them 2-1 in their first home Western League Division 1 match of the season, played before a gate of over 2,100 spectators, with receipts totalling £124. The first half of fast thrustful play by each side in turn, with a generous money's worth in goalmouth thrills, was spoilt somewhat by strangely disjointed second half, in which the visitors took the main honours, but failed to overcome strong defence, in which full-backs Coppack and Dando and goalkeeper Vince performed with much distinction. Vince made many superb clearances, and was on his best form. All the goals were scored in the first half, and Street got the first. It came after less than ten minutes as a result of hesitation in the defence when the ball might have been kicked hard and easily to a safety zone. As it was, however, the ball crossed to centre-forward Parsons, who. entirely unmarked, swung his foot round and flashed the ball into the right-hand side of the Trowbridge net. After Cox had saved a fine shot by Granville, Trowbridge equalised five minutes later. Granville, who again controlled the ball well, gave a perfectly judged through pass to Allaway, who made no mistake with a hard shot. It was pity that more of this type of pass did not reach Allaway, who is an accurate shot when given clear run. Vince tipped over a rousing first-timer by inside-right Baker, and at the other end Cox saved at the foot of an upright a hard shot from Webb. Trowbridge took the lead after 25 minutes, Webb took the ball through in one of his best runs before passing perfectly to Granville, who scored with a well-directed shot which had Cox beaten all the way. Vince made some fine clearances after this. Early in the second half the Trowbridge goal had some exciting escapes, but play was nothing like so interesting or skilful. Best incidents of the latter stages were shot by Lovesey which missed scoring by the barest of margins, and when Street s centre-half, Curtis, kicked off his goal-line as the ball was curling inside a post. Trowbridge and Chippenham Town are now the only unbeaten clubs in Division 1. Trowbridge team: Vince; Coppack. Dando, Lovesey. Tuck, Marshall; Hazell, Granville, Allaway. Dean. Webb.
