Calne keep perfect run going.
Calne Eagles finished Group A of the Division 2 Cup with a perfect 100% winning record thanks to a late winner from Shaun Jefferies, although they were made to fight hard for this victory by Trowbridge Town "Aâ€.
With both teams assured of their place in the semi-finals the game probably lacked the usual intensity. Also the rock hard bobbly pitch and blinding sunshine didn't help either team's performance.
Calne probably edged the play in the first half with Mickey Taraskevics and Adam Welch going close to opening the scoring.
At the other Trowbridge had a good chance when a mix up between Calne defender Lawrence Elliott and keeper Andy Windsor presented Dean Gumm with a chance to score but the experienced striker placed his lobbed shot just over the bar. But Gumm did give his team the lead after 25 minutes when Calne failed to clear a free kick into the box and Gumm powered the ball home from 10 yards out.
Calne equalised shortly before half time when great pressing from Harry Ozut and Karl Sharratt forced a Trowbridge defender into a rushed back pass towards his own keeper, which was intercepted by striker Mickey Taraskevics, who rounded goalkeeper Nathan Taylor to score his 45th goal of the season. An incredibly impressive tally for the winger turned striker, especially considering he also never takes penalties!
The second half remained tight. Calne looked the most likely to get the winner but were denied by stubborn defending from the home side. After 72 minutes Calne thought they had got their noses in front after Adam Welch set up midfielder Harry Ozut for a tap in, but the goal was belatedly ruled out for offside.
With only 2 minutes left on the clock it looked like the game was heading for draw, but a superb pass out of defence from Calne's Matt Bowery sent sub Shaun Jefferies through on goal to score the winner with a superb lob over the keeper.
