Match Report

Mitel
2 - 2
 Trowbridge Town

League (Wiltshire Intermediate League)
Saturday, October 2nd, 1999
3:00 PM Kick-off

Scorers: Ben Phillips (2)

Trowbridge lost their 100 % record today in a match full of talking points. Mitel had the wind at their backs in the first half and Trowbridge did not settle very well. It therefore was against the run of play when Neil Kirkpatrick shot against the Mitel 'keeper and Ben Phillips followed up to give us a one nil lead. Mitel hit back with a fine headed equaliser from Mark Stacey and also hit the post twice before the half time whistle. The traveling Trowbridge supporters were still in good spirits for the second half, hoping that the wind could now be of assistance and their team would take control of the second half. Neil Kirkpatrick found the back of the net only to have the goal ruled out for off-side. This was a controversial decision to say the least, particularly bearing in mind that the 'acting' linesman who flagged was a Mitel official! However further pressure finally brought a 2-1 lead when Phillips grabbed his second with a powerful finish from close in. Unfortunately this was not to be enough as Mark Croydon squared the match with a well struck free kick into the top right hand corner. Not a good performance by any means but then again nor was the performance by the "home" linesman who (unbelievably) was actually cheering his team throughout the game!
